Landscape/Interior
Paul Murray is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA), and his landscapes have been selected for distinction in numerous shows, including the PSA’s international exhibitions. He received his degree in fine art from the University of New Mexico. His pastel work has received numerous awards, including the Jack Richeson/Best of Show award in the 8th Pastel 100 and the International Association of Pastel Societies’ Grand Prix’d Pastel (Best of Show, 2001). His work has appeared in The Artist’s Magazine, The Pastel Journal and American Artist. Murray’s gallery associations include Brazos Fine Art in Taos, New Mexico, and the Weems Art Gallery in Albuquerque.
Still Life/Floral
Ron Monsma is Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting at Indiana University, South Bend. He has been painting and teaching for more than 25 years and works in both oils and pastels, painting figures, landscapes and still lifes. Monsma has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, International Artist and The Pastel Journal, most recently as the winner of the Jack Richeson/Best of Show in the 9th annual Pastel 100. The artist has enjoyed solo exhibitions at galleries in Chicago, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. He is represented by Miller Gallery in Cincinnati Ohio.
Abstract/Non-Objective
Jean Dalton works in both abstract and figurative formats, and in a variety of media. She has studied art at the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art In New Jersey, the Pratt Institute and Art Students League in New York, and has also done independent in Paris, France. Dalton is a member of many professional art organizations including the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Connecticut Pastel Society. She has had solo exhibitions at The Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich; John Slade Ely House in New Haven; University of Connecticut in Waterbury; and Jorgensen Gallery, University of Conn., in Storrs.
Portrait/Figure
Award-winning artist Ilene Gienger-Stanfield is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. She received her degree in art from Southern Oregon University, but credits her approach to pastels to her studies with renowned figurative artist Harley Brown. She has a passion for painting portraits from life in pastel, which she shares as a teacher in classes and workshops. The artist is represented by Rive Gauche Art Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona; Roby King Galleries in Bainbridge Island, Washington; and Rogue Gallery and Art Center in Medford, Oregon.
Animal/Wildlife
Nancy MacDonald is a British artist who moved to California in 1996, and now lives in Wisconsin. MacDonald earned her degree in art in the U.K., but studies with U.S. artist Bob Gerbracht to further her skills. She works in pastels and oils, and enjoys painting many subjects. She has exhibited her work widely, and has received multiple awards, including a Best of Show in the Pastel Society of the West Coast’s Pastels USA show and a Gold Medal of Excellence in The Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100. Her work is represented by Kelleghan Gallery in Atlanta, as well as Jake Dent Gallery and Tomales Fine Art in California.
PROSPECTUS
ELIGIBILITY
Artists must be age 16 or older. Work must be at least 80% soft pastel; no oil pastel. Nupastels and other “harder” pastels are considered soft pastels. The contest is open to artists in the U.S. and abroad. All works must be original. Compositions based on published material or other artists’ work are NOT considered original and are not eligible. Paintings executed in a workshop under another artist‘s supervision or paintings based on another person's photograph (even if it’s copyright-free) are NOT eligible. Anyone honored with an Art Spirit Foundation Award in any competition during the past three years is ineligible to win the same award this year. Employees or associates of F+W Media, Inc., Jack Richeson & Co. Inc., or their immediate families may not enter. The Pastel Journal reserves the right to reject work deemed unsuitable for publication or that does not meet above criteria. Work previously published in a national publication or receiving an award at a national-level exhibition at the time of submission to this contest is not eligible.
PREPARING YOUR ENTRY
SLIDE ENTRIES: 35mm slides must be accompanied by an Official Entry Form or facsimile. Odd-sized, glass or metal slide frames will not be accepted. You may enter work in any and all categories; there is no limit to the number of slides you may enter. You may mail all your entries in one large envelope as long as slides for each category are grouped together in smaller envelopes inside. Please write directly on slides. They should be labeled individually and legibly and should not be taped together. Each submitted slide must include the following information:
a) On the front of the slide (the side that faces you as you hold it up to the light to be viewed), note the category, the artwork’s title and dimensions, and the top direction.
b) On the back of the slide, write your name, address and phone number legibly. Incomplete entry forms and improperly marked slides will be disqualified.
DIGITAL ENTRIES: You may enter files online or via regular mail. All digital files submitted via regular mail must be accompanied by an Official Entry Form or facsimilie. You may enter work in any and all categories; there is no limit to the number of images you may enter. You may mail all your entries in on one CD. Please include a separate sheet that gives the title and dimensions of each image. The titles of the images on the CD must match the titles on the sheet. Image files cannot exceed 2MG. The file format must be JPEG. If your work is selected for the top 100, we will contact you about sending a high-res replacement. Incomplete entry forms and information sheets, and improperly marked CDs will be disqualified.
FEES AND PAYMENT : All entries are $15 per slide or image. A credit card number and signature, check or money order for the required jury fee (in U.S. funds drawn on a U.S. bank) must accompany a mailed-in entry. You may send one check to cover all entries in a package. Or you may enter online using a credit card. There will be a $10 charge for returned checks or declined credit cards. Credit cards will be charged within 90 days of contest deadline. Charge will appear as “F+W Contests.”
MATERIALS: Slides and CDs will not be returned (so have a duplicate made for your own files). The Pastel Journal will not be responsible for the loss, damage or return of any slides or CDs submitted to the competition.

JUDGING
Entries will be prejudged and finalists will be chosen by the magazine staff. Award winners and honorable mentions will be selected by the jurors named on the opposite page. All properly prepared entries will be viewed and judged. The jurors and editors reserve the right to recategorize the entries.
NOTIFICATIONS
All winners will be notified by January 31, 2010. The results will not otherwise be made public until they are published in The Pastel Journal (April 2010 issue). Non-winning entrants will not be individually notified of the results. Your cancelled check or credit-card charge will be notification for receipt of your entry. To be notified directly of your entry’s receipt, include a self-addressed, stamped postcard.
