Watercolor Workshop: The Color of Sunset

Accomplished watercolorist Paul Jackson shares watercolor techniques for painting the colors of sunsets and sunrises from photos in this step-by-step video tutorial.

Paul Jackson | Runtime (108 min)

Follow accomplished watercolorist Paul Jackson’s simple steps to paint serene, awe-inspiring subjects from photos. After a brief review of the magic hour for light, as well as the techniques to embellish this time of day, watch as Paul demonstrates how to paint a tranquil sunset, which enchantingly illuminates the rippling water below.

You’ll learn how to briefly block in a composition before unleashing a mother wash of colors to dance across the paper. Then apply layers of masking fluid, paint, and texture to develop the underpainting. Add realistic elements of nature, including shadows and reflections, lush foliage, and luminous skies to build up the final painting.

With Paul’s laid-back approach, you can paint majestic skies accompanied by alluring water vistas to create your very own peaceful sunset/sunrise, no matter the time of day!

Follow Paul’s step-by-step painting instruction on how to block in and paint sunrise and sunset landscapes! You’ll learn:

  • Detailed tips on how to overcome photo blunders
  • Techniques on how to capture the movement of water on the canvas
  • Several ways to manipulate light within your painting
  • How to paint natural, lifelike elements, such as flowing water, vivacious trees, and plush clouds

This man does beautiful work! Many times during this video my heart sank. He’d create a beautiful piece and then he’d “bring in the darks! I just knew they, the watercolors, were going to ruin the painting. To my surprise he reined in the intimidating color and created a beautiful and VERY realistic piece. He’s a genius! I hope you make plenty more videos! God Bless!

Beautiful, but it pains me to see him using that "stupid" dual small brush.

Lots of helpful tips and techniques. Great use of color and drama to create original scene beyond the more simple photo reference.
