Secrets in Watercolor with Laurie Humble: The Unifying Wash

Laurie Humble | 74 min

Learn how to use what is perhaps your most powerful tool for emphasizing your focal point—the unifying wash. In this video, artist Laurie Humble uses exercises and finished painting examples to show you how to use small- and large-scale washes in your work—follow along as Laurie paints overlapping ribbons and then a group of cherries to practice the small scale washes, then background foliage in a garden setting to practice the larger-scale washes that can be used to push back the picture plane. Laurie then paints a street scene to demonstrate how these washes work together to add a depth to your paintings that will immediately make them more realistic and lifelike.

I found this video tutorial very helpful, especially in learning more about separating washes. The pace is perfect and steady so I could follow and understand very easily. I like also that she employed both a still life painting and a cityscape painting - it helped to highlight the differences of close and far in a still life versus a landscape where color fades as one goes back into the distance.

My understanding of washes was very weak until I watched Laurie's video. I really appreciate the logical way she presented this subject.
