I don't see how Richard can improve on this video! He explains things so clearly and with such thought provoking words, it makes this process very exciting and inspirational. He shares what obviously has been years of discovery and for that I am truly grateful!!

Mr McKinley. many, many thanks for a wonderful journey, both the practical side of it, but more important: the soul, the wonderful philosophy you implant in your explanations.
Thank you!

Mr. McKinley has a unique way of teaching, and really puts his soul into it. His excitement for the process is very apparent. He may contradict the teaching of others, but as an artist new to pastel, his teaching made good sense. Where others may state they paint their under painting " this way every time, and it is fool proof" Mr. McKinley, teaches the reasoning with color theory and value, and gives the artist the ability to take each painting and make it our own. I like this style because I don't want every painting I do to look the same with the exact same under painting each time I do my work. He goes over palette set up, which I found interesting and realized I bought the wrong box! Darn it! He is easy to listen to and to understand. He helped me to acheive my goals as a new pastel artist.

I learned so much from this video. Mr. McKinley explains and demonstrates so clearly how to create an overall concept for your art and how to achieve your goal through watercolour under painting followed by pastel work. Can't wait to try it out!

Mr. McKinley is as gifted a teacher as he is an artist. I felt like this video tied together every video, article, and book I've viewed. He gives in depth, yet down to earth, explanations of the why behind pastel paintings while demonstrating the how. As a beginner, I found this to be one of the most helpful, if not the most helpful, pieces of instruction I've seen.

Mr. Mckinley did a wonderful job in presenting this video and shared his techniques to help anyone whether they are a beginner or an advanced artist. I love his way of interacting with the viewer and the way he makes one feel that he is right there with them; he is very down to earth, and yet, so professional. Awesome presentation all the way around, now I have to get going and 'go do'. :-)

Mr. McKinley covered a very large area of information with ease and professionalism. He is a teacher at heart. I found this video to be both foundational and challenging. There is a great reason to view this as a beginner and someone that is advanced but willing to grow. Very well done

Outstanding clarity of instruction. This has something for every level of pastelist. Professionally done in every respect. Anyone thinking of producing an art video should watch this as a "how-to".

Mr. McKinley is a great artist and there is a lot that could be learned from him, but unfortunately he seems more interested in hearing himself speak than in picking up a pastel and showing us his methods. Almost the full first half of this video was spent going into long lectures about materials and thumbnail sketches before he even picked up a brush (incidentally, these are the exact same speeches he gave in his first video, and it was old hat to all but the most extreme newcomers even then, as it is really basic stuff). Don't get me wrong, the man does have things to offer, and for this reason I am willing to sit through an hour of lectures and self-help catch phrases to get to those few gems of wisdom scattered among them, but really, I wish he would do a little less pontificating and just a bit more demonstrating.
