Art markers are a highly versatile and accessible medium, suitable for both professionals and amateurs. While they may not always receive the same level of recognition as traditional media, such as oil paints or watercolors, markers offer distinct advantages and find widespread use among professional artists across diverse disciplines.

Here are a few reasons why markers shouldn’t be overlooked as an artistic medium for professionals:

✓

Precision and Control: Markers allow for precise and controlled lines, making them ideal for detailed work such as illustrations, architectural drawings, fashion design sketches and graphic design. The fine tips of markers enable artists to create intricate patterns, textures and precise outlines to achieve a level of detail that may be challenging with other media.

✓

Vibrant Colors and Layering: Alcohol-based markers, in particular, offer a wide range of vibrant colors and excellent color saturation. They can be layered easily, allowing artists to explore translucent color effects.

✓

Speed and Efficiency: Markers are a quick-drying medium, allowing for a faster workflow compared to some traditional painting media. This speed and efficiency can be helpful for sketching on the go, working out simple compositions or creating finished works under a tight deadline.

✓

Portability and Convenience: Markers are compact and portable, making them a convenient medium for artists on the go or those working in non-studio environments. They require minimal setup and cleanup, eliminating the need for water containers or additional tools. This makes markers a popular choice for plein air sketching, urban sketching or travel sketching.

Experimenting with different art media can be beneficial. Here’s how using markers could help your practice, especially if you’re an artist who works primarily with traditional media:

1

Variety: Art markers offer a different aesthetic and technique compared to traditional oil and watercolor paints. Exploring the unique properties of markers can be a great way to explore edges and color relationships.

2

Working Quickly: Alcohol markers dry quickly, allowing for a faster workflow compared to oils and some watercolor techniques. Their quick-drying speed and permanence make them ideal tools for gestural exercises that build hand-eye coordination and help to develop artistic confidence.

3

Mixed Media: Incorporating markers into your oil and watercolor paintings opens up opportunities for mixed media experimentation. You can use markers to add precise details, enhance colors or create vibrant accents in your traditional paintings. This combination of media can introduce exciting contrasts and create dynamic visual effects.

4

New Techniques: Exploring markers can help you develop new artistic skills and broaden your technical expertise. The techniques used with alcohol markers, such as layering, blending, stippling and feathering, may differ from those employed in oils and watercolors. By learning and practicing these marker-specific techniques, you can improve your overall understanding of color theory, shading and composition, which can benefit your work in other media.

When working with markers, keep in mind that once marks are made, they can’t be erased or lightened. No worries, though! Marker manufacturers offer numerous online resources and helpful information on how to create smooth gradations. In the video below, you’ll see how a simple transition can significantly enhance your artistic practice when using markers.

By experimenting with various media, including markers, you can foster personal growth, broaden your creative horizons and cultivate a unique artistic style. Are you familiar with working with markers? Do you believe they’re often overlooked as a valuable artistic medium? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Scott:
Happy to find this article. I have been a proponent and user of markers.
I agree with you about all the benefits of markers, however answer these questions for me:
    1) Are these works archival? I use permanent markers of course, but does permanent is = to archival? Some I’ve used in the past have gotten discolored.
    2) In terms of sales of this works, is it possible to price them like other mediums (oil, pastel, etc?)
I hope you return me some answers. Also, could you email them to my address? [email protected]
    Thank you very much!
